Squadron history from 1980 to 1989
Overall 1980
8 cadets had the opportunity to fly in Gazzelles at RAF Shawbury.Cdt M Felton sells most tickets at Christmas fair and is awarded a flight in a Jet Provost. 2nd in the Ffennell shield. Sponsored walk held across the Stiperstones and Long Mynd. Cdt Sgt Barre obtained squadrons first parachute course allocation. Flt. Lt. Reglar resigns due to poor health; F.O Frost is promoted and takes command. 13 cadets attended summer camp at RAF Hereford and again took best squadron on camp. A Squadron Mini bus had been offered to the squadron after attempts by cadets to raise funds. Cdt Sgt A Owen attends IACE in Hong Kong. The Squadron restarted the band however as all the old band equipment had been sold new equipment had to be purchased. Fg Off S G Pryce transfers from 1165 (Oswestry) Squadron Squadron provided Banner party at Corps Athletics and received a letter of recognition from HQAC. Winners of the class ‘A’ athletics.14 cadets attend the first wing training weekend at Nesscliffe. Cadet John Reader wins Corps Blue for Football. Wing Review Held at RAF Cosford

Winners of drill competition for the first time. Winners of the Ffennell Shield for shooting. Annual Camp was held at RAF Newton where the squadron was best at camp. Winners of wing Orienteering competition Annual dinner held at Airman’s Mess at RAF Shawbury. Played Hosts to IACE cadets from Canada, USA, Israel and Europe. Nominated by wing to go forward as ‘Sir Alan Lees Trophy’candidates.
Overall 1982
Squadron attended Easter camp at RAF St Athan and was best squadron on camp. Winners of the Ffennell shield for the forth time in 5 years. 5th overall at wing athletics. Flt Lt Frost attended IACE at Sweden. Presentation of new Colours at the Shire Hall (donated by RAFA). The RAFA also presented the squadron with a Mace for the Band. Annual dinner held at the Airman’s Mess At RAF Shawbury. Mr John Sutton appointed AWO. Mr John Charles is awarded his commission.
Overall 1983
2nd in Ffennell Shield. 12 cadets attended annual camp at RAF Honnington once again placed first at camp and a further 5 cadets attended RAF St Athan. Cdt F/Sgt S Hampton attained second place in the RAF Careers office model competition.
Squadron purchases Punts from the council to build a canoe landing stage at the Headquarters.

Overall 1984
The main annual camp was held at RAF Kinloss where the cadets had the opportunity to fly in Nimrods, 5 other cadets went to RAF Stanbridge and were part of the winning flight. Winners of the ‘King’ Cup (drill competition). Numbers increase to allow for a third flight known as ‘Trenchard’.
24 cadets attended training camp held at Anzio 3rd-4th March. Sgt Kay selected for IACE in Canada. Cpl Carver attends Frimley Park leadership course.
Drum Corps and Continuity drill team put on display for charity event.
Overall 1985
Flt Lt Frost is promoted to wing staff – only the second officer of the squadron to achieve the accolade, Flt Lt Pryce takes command.
Winners of the ‘King’ Cup (drill competition) again. 2nd in the Wilkins bowl competition. Cpl Harris came 2nd in the Dovey trophy. 5th in Regional drill competition.
20 cadets attended RAF Newton for Summer Camp. Squadron Mini bus was scrapped.
30 cadets visited RAF Mildenhall for the air display. Band performs at Meole Brace Fete.
Overall 1986
Winners of the ‘King’ Cup (drill competition) for the third year in succession.
Summer camp attended by 16 cadets at RAF Cranwell. 3rd in Wing orienteering. Cdt A Smith became the squadron’s first winner of the Dovey Trophy for the best cadet at Wing level. 8th at wing athletics.
49 cadets attended the royal tournament. Mr M Edwards has taken over the Band. Female cadets started to join the squadron this year.
Overall 1987
AWO C Cottrell dies in hospital whilst with squadron. Winners of wing aircraft recognition competition. Once again Winners of the ‘King’ Cup (drill competition). Winners of the Wilkins bowl for the smartest squadron on parade. The Riddell trophy was awarded for the first time to the cadet who has done most for the community (Cadet Jenkins assisting in Riding for the Disabled). 16 cadets attended annual camp at RAF Manston.
Overall 1988
Winners of wing aircraft recognition competition for the second time. For the 5th consecutive year 1119 were Winners of the ‘King’ Cup (drill competition). The squadron came 4th in the National ‘Air Britain’ aircraft recognition competition with Cdt Cpl Greenhaulgh taking the individual 3rd place. 4 female cadets attended RAF Rudloe Manor and 23 male cadets attended RAF Brawdy. Mr B Collins is appointed AWO.
Overall 1989
The squadron moved to its new headquarters at Copthorne Barracks. Winners of wing aircraft recognition competition for the third consecutive year. Flt Lt Frost returns to Squadron after relinquishing his WSO post. 3rd in drill competition. 2nd in banner competition. 4th in smartest squadron. Cdt D Martin wins Dovey Trophy. 13 cadets attended summer camp at RAF Swanton Morley.
